Online Intermediaries Workshop

“Online Intermediaries”, a two-day workshop that took place at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University, analyzed and evaluated different approaches to regulating online intermediaries, from Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to search engines, based on a comparative analysis of different regulatory regimes around the world.

Invited participants were comprised of Berkman Center for Internet & Society faculty, staff, and fellows as well as members of the Global Network of Interdisciplinary Internet and Society Research Centers (NoC). This diverse set of individuals explored how governments around the world interact with online intermediaries, primarily in regard to accountability and liability, but also with respect to the effect of varying levels of regulation, and what the effects of these interactions are.

The workshop marked the beginning of the synthesis phase in the collaboration of the Network of Centers on this topic. From the conversations, the participants have sought to identify policy considerations and – where possible – recommendations as well as next steps for this international and multidisciplinary expert group.
